Oceanography Photo - Research Project

This assignment will help you to become aware of your surroundings and to record oceanographic observations with a camera.

It is also a research project. Once you have the pictures, you will need to explain what you have observed, in technically correct language, citing your references within the text, and with a list of cited references at the end of your report.

You don't have to be a professional photographer or a camera expert to do this project. You just have to keep an eye out for oceanographic features. The assignment is as follows:

  • You need to prepare and submit a photo album that includes, at a minimum, ten (10) subjects from the list below, or other subjects.

  • You must shoot the photos yourself, and be able to provide either the film negatives or the orginal files from the camera memory which contains EXIF information.

  • You will need a camera, either digital or film. If you do not own a camera, you may borrow a friend's or use a disposable version. Don't even think of submitting images from your camera phone!

  • If you aren't already comfortable with the technology involved in this sort of work, you may be better off doing the research paper instead.

  • If done correctly, it's much more work than it might appear to be at first glance, but you will learn a great deal!

  • The photo album presentation is up to your imagination (so be creative), but you must include the following items for each photo included:
    • clear (i.e.: in-focus, well-composed, well-exposed) illustration of the oceanographic feature or process

    • name of oceanographic feature or process

    • date and location in which you took the photo (small index map might help)

    • clear labeling directly on the photo to help distinguish the feature

    • type-written caption (at least one paragraph) describing the feature and generally how it was formed (write it so that someone without a knowledge of oceanography will be able to understand it)

    • VALID reference, in proper APA format

Features: (check your text and/or elsewhere for definitions)

Possible feature choices include:
(submit only one photo of each selected feature)
Example of sea-cliff retreat
Example of mitigation or prevention of cliff retreat
Example of storm drain outfall pipe, showing potential pollution
Historical ship involved in oceanographic research (better be able to identify it!)
Estuary
Sea bird (once again, identified!)
Tide pool denizens (ditto above)
Beach control device (groin, jetty, etc.)
Point bar
Sand dune
Wave refraction
Cove
Example of an emergent coastline feature (sea cave, sea stack, wave-cut bench, marine terrace)
Any other oceanographic feature you choose (use your imagination, as well as your textbook!)
